National Assembly wades into N-power Beneficiaries’ Disengagement, set to meet PMB

The National Assembly has shown concern over the disengagement of the Batch A and B beneficiaries of the N-power Program.

This was necessitated by the out cry of the volunteers requesting that the FG should consider giving them permanent jobs other than throwing them back to the streets.

The leadership of the NASS will on Thursday night meet President Muhammadu Buhari while the minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development would appear before its ad hoc committee on Social Investment Program and Social Security to intimate the law makers on the plan the Ministry has for the npower volunteers.

A source close to the legislative chamber furthered that the Minister of Finance has also been invited to appear before the law makers on thursday 2nd July to explain to the plans the government has for it's teaming youths.

Some lawmakers stated that the move to intervene became absolutely necessary because npower serves as a means of livelihood for almost 85% of the beneficiaries. And many npower volunteers are married with children with many siblings and relatives to care for and therefore depend so much on the monthly stipends of 30,000 for their survival.

The lawmakers are making moves to get the attention of Mr president to reconsider his stand on sacking the beneficiaries rather than attach them to various MDAs of FG and the States.

The Leadership of NASS has also invited the chairman of Governors forum, his Excellency Dr.Kayode Fayemi to also brief the Senate on Thursday this week and house of representatives on Tuesday next week on the way forward.

The beneficiaries of the N-power programs have been heartbroken following the sudden decision of disengagement without a stated transition plan. It was reported that a beneficiary from Ibadan committed suicide on hearing the news last week. The NASS noted that many will still commit suicide considering the economic challenges caused by COVID-19 pandemic. The law makers stated that this is not the right time to disengage any worker.

The lawmakers stated that it will not be easily absorbed by Nigerians and other nations if the APC led Federal Government retrench more than 500,000 young Nigerians into unknown destinations without a clear plan of alternative means of livelihood.

NASS added that it world pose a great danger to the nation especially at this point that unemployment growth in the country is a uncontrollable state while emphasising that releasing the volunteers in the street after training them without anything to fall back on, and recruiting another batch to entrenched to street without engage, does not speak progress for Nigeria as a Nation.
