Federal Government to employ 774,000 Youths


The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed readiness to engage 774,000 youths aged 18-30 years in a unique programme named Special Public Works (SWP) Program.

The program is to cut across the 36 States of the Federation and primarily targets those in rural communities at 1,000 youths per Local Government.

Special Public Works program (SPW) is a 3-month paid program initiated by the President Mohammadu Buhari administration which will last from October to December, 2020. The program is aimed at reducing the increasing youth unemployment in the country and ensuring social safety among the youths. No skill or formal education is required in the program.

The beneficiaries of the program will be engaged in sweeping streets, clearing gutters and market squares for a period of 3 months basically during the non-farming seasons.

The National Directorate of employment on their Twitter handle dated 26th February stated that the Federal Government has kicked off the program in 8 pilots States and have engaged 40,000 youths who were selected from 5 rural Local Governments per each of the 8 States in the pilot phase.  The States are Ebonyi, Borno, Adamawa, Edo, Ekiti, Kwara, Katsina and Jigawa.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and  National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, stated on Monday in a press conference on Fiscal Stimulus Measures in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic and Oil Prices Fiscal Shock that President Mohammedu Buhari has given approval for the extension of the program to the 36 States of the Federation.

Mrs Zainab added that the program will be funded from the N60billion COVID-19 Intervention Fund.
